Education ROI

Education ROI Calculator

Put tuition, time out of work, and an expected pay lift on one horizon so you can see net value and a simple break-even.

Decision: Under these assumptions, does this program financially make sense?

This tool runs in your browser. CareerPathMage does not send the numbers you enter to our servers.

Program cost and pay scenario

Result

Net -$20,000.00 over the horizon

User-input scenario. This page does not use official college earnings data.

Opportunity cost

Total investment
$100,000.00
Lifetime lift

Years to break even

How to read the result

A positive net value means the lift you typed exceeded the costs you typed over that horizon. It is not a prediction that you will be admitted, finish, or earn that amount.

Calculated facts

Totals and break-even figures come only from the values on this page. They describe the math, not what you should do.

Decision factors

Fit, risk, time, and personal constraints stay outside the calculator. A higher cash figure can still be the wrong path.

Methodology

Opportunity cost is current pay × years in school. Total investment is program cost plus opportunity cost. Working years are horizon minus years in school. Lifetime lift is (expected pay − current pay) × working years. Net value is lifetime lift minus total investment. Years to break even is total investment ÷ annual lift when lift is positive. No discounting.

Assumptions

  • Expected pay is your scenario, not an official outcome.
  • You forgo current pay during years in school unless you lower that input.

Examples

Two-year certificate

$20,000 tuition, two years out of an $40,000 job, then $50,000 pay over a 10-year horizon: opportunity cost is $80,000, investment $100,000, lift $80,000 over eight working years, net −$20,000 under those assumptions.

How to use it

  1. Enter program cost, years in school, current pay, and expected pay after the program.
  2. Set a horizon in years.
  3. Read total investment, lifetime lift, net value, and years to break even.

Limits

  • Aid, scholarships, and part-time study need to be folded into the costs you enter.
  • This is not college, tax, or financial advice.

Questions

Does this use College Scorecard earnings?
No. Launch math uses only the costs and pay figures you type. Official program outcomes are a later, certified ingest — not this page.
What is opportunity cost here?
Current annual pay times years in school. If you will keep working, lower current pay or years in school to match that plan.
